DEMAC began working under the following guidelines:
During this first stage we found the common pressing need that Mexican women harbor to be listened to and to find the right forum where their stories are valued as well as where their points of view can be heard. It was from this need that DEMAC created in 1993 the DEMAC Awards, For women that have the courage to tell their story and founded DEMAC Publishing Books.
Since then DEMAC, besides it’s previous activities, has hosted 8 women autobiographical writing contests, 1 on Latin-American Conscience, 1 on Mexico’s southeast Autobiography, 1 with High school Seniors, 1 on Photography, 4 on Women’s Penitentiry Centers, 1 in favor of gender equality in the Media and finally one in Queretaro for Grandmother’s. DEMAC has published more than 30 autobiographies of Mexican women and a few more titles under biographies of Mexican women and related themes. The DEMAC Awards have had a special social relevance among the women inmates in the Penitentiary Centers, that have shown much enthusiasm towards the DEMAC Awards. These contests have originated in four text volumes of Penitentiary Literature, that have been used as an interdisciplinary thesis topic.
